Giving sadaqah and spending in Allah’s way

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

Assalamu Alayqum.I would like an explanation on the following matter:
1.What’s the the difference between giving sadaqah and spending in the cause of Allah?
2.In an hadith, the prophet (S.A.W) mention that only three types of people can beg.Does this means that we can’t give those beggars on the street anything if we see that they are free of the conditions ordain by the prophet?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

  1. Sadaqah very specifically refers to giving funds to a human in need. Sending in the way of Allah refers to all type of spending, whether it is to build a Masjid, print a Islamic book, arrange water etc.
  2. The third individual is the one who is poor. Most beggars are poor. So it is fine to give to them. Besides, the impermissibility is for a person to beg, not for one to give.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best
