Waxing And Removal Of Hair For Women

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Question:

Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh,

1. It is a common practice of young Muslim females to wax their body hair i.e. hair from arms, legs and face especially before their weddings. I know it is not permissible to pluck the eyebrow hair but is this practice of removing the hair from legs and arms permissible?

2. Is it permissible for a woman to remove the hair from places such as upper lip, chest etc. where hair growth is usually not common in women but persists due to medical problems?

Jazakallah in advance.

Answer:

Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

Many Scholars have stated that it is permissible for women to remove hair from their arms and legs only when it is meant for a woman to enhance her beauty for her husband. The hair can be removed through waxing or other means.

If there is facial hair on the upper lip (moustache) that brings about a manly look, then it recommended that it be removed. If hair grows on the chest of the woman, then she is allowed to remove these.

And Allah Knows Best.
