Salat al-Janazah lil Ghaib

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Is it allowed to pray Ghaibana Janaazah salah? (Some one who is dead in another country?)

Answer:

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

According to Imam Abu Hanifa [ranhimahu] and Imam Malik raḥimahullāh (may Allāh have mercy upon him)  Janazah Salah over someone whose body is not in front of him i.e. in another city or country is impermissible. In the Hanafi Fiqh, the body of the dead person must be present in order for the Janazah Salah to be valid.

Besides a couple of incidents, most notably the Janazah prayer of Najashi whose body was not in Madinah, the Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) did not pray the Janazah Salah of anyone who may have passed away or been killed somewhere else besides Madinah.
