Announcing a lost object in the Masjid

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Announcing a lost object in the Masjid

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

It is mentioned in a hadith that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam forbade announcing lost items in the mosque. (Sunan Ibn Majah p.56 v.1- Under the Chapter regarding the prohibition of making an announcement of lost objects)

In another hadith, Saaiduna Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said: “Whoever hears a man announcing in the mosque about some objects which he has lost, let him tell him ‘May Allah not return it to you for the mosques are not built for that’.” (Sahih Muslim p.210 v.1 – Kitabul Masaajid)

The scholars have stated that the reason why the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam forbade announcing lost items in the mosque is that such a thing leads to the voice being raised and the Masaajids of Allah (SWA) was erected for the remembrance of Allah (SWA) and not to make announcement for lost or missing objects. (Imam Nawawi in his Sharhul Muslim)
