Announcing a lost item in the Masjid

Question

Is this Hadith authentic?

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) is reported to have said, “Whoever hears a person announcing a lost item in the Masjid then he should say, “May Allah not return it to you for verily the Masjid has not been built for this purpose.”

Answer

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith. The Hadith is therefore authentic.

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 568)

Since the person announcing a lost item in the Masjid did not uphold the etiquette of the Masjid, raised his voice in the Masjid and possibly confused those who were offering Salah, Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) commanded us to say, “May Allah not return it to you, as a punishment”
