Is Laser Hair Removal Allowed

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Question

Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh,

I need urgent favour. Can you please ask Maulana a great dilemma for girls: removing hair from the pubic area. Using hair removal creams is less than ideal as they grow back very fast.

A friend of mine has her full body laser hair removal scheduled for tomorrow. Despite her being aware of Brazilian wax not being permitted, she is hoping that there should some sort of exception when it comes to laser as it is only a matter of 6-8 treatments and her pubic area will be free of hair. Please ask Maulana to look into fiqh and see if there is any door of mercy open in this matter.

Answer

Wa Alaikum Salam,

Removal of the pubic hair is from the Sunnah and is part of one’s personal hygiene. The Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Five practices are of Fitra: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, depilating the hair of the armpits, clipping the nails and cutting the moustache short.” [1]

The removal of the pubic hair is fulfilled by any means that fulfil the purpose which is hygiene and purification.[2]

Please note that the removal of the pubic hair is recommended weekly and should not exceed beyond forty days.

However, if the procedure used is harmful or it involves exposing the private parts to others, then that would not be allowed.
