Question:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

Can spending on one’s family be done on 10th night (tonight)? Would that be counted towards spending on the day of Aashura?

Trying to find time tomorrow will be difficult due to work.

Answer:

In The Name Of Allah, The Most-Merciful, The Most Kind

There is a virtue in spending on one’s family on Ashura (10th Muharram) due to what has been narrated from the Prophet (pbuh) that he said-

“Whoever generously spends on his family on the Day of Ashura, Allah will be generous on him for the entire year.”

Although there is a dispute about the strength and authenticity of some ahadith about the virtues of actions in Ashura, this hadith has been authenticated, and therefore we may act upon it.

[Raddul Muhtaar, Volume 2, page 418-419]

According to the Islamic Calendar, the new day starts from the maghrib of the night before that. So if you spend on your family the night of the 10th Muharram, it would be counted.
