It is unlawful and haram. It is the practice of jahiliya (pre-Islamic era). Islam does not allow it.
وَلاَ تَقْتُلُواْ أَوْلادَكُمْ خَشْيَةَ إِمْلاقٍ . [الإسراء : 31]
Yes, if four months have not passed on pregnancy, then in some particular and inevitable circumstances it is allowed to abort.
Conducting gender test is not right.
