Extended Warranty On Appliances

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta Azaadville

Question:

I would like to know whether I can buy an extended warranty plan for my laptop from the manufacturer.

Answer:

Purchasing an extended warranty for one’s appliances or products is tantamount to purchasing insurance which is Haraam. The elements of gambling and Riba (interest) are both found in purchasing insurance, hence prohibited. We therefore advise abstention.

Yes, if the extended warranty was not purchased separately, but included in the sale price when purchasing a new product and sold as one package together with the new purchased item, then benefitting from such an extended warranty will be permitted. In that case, the price paid will be considered to be in lieu of the purchased product; with the extended warranty being an add-on bonus (even though the warranty may cause the price of the product to be inflated).
