Performing Salaah On An Airplane

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta Azaadville

Question:

Can one sit down in a plane and pray if there’s no facility to stand, must he repeat the prayer once he reaches destination? If he does repeat it, will be the full prayer or qasr?

Answer:

We have received your query in regards to performing Salaah on a plane. Our response is as follows:

Unfortunately, many current day ‘Muslim’ airlines and even others prohibit standing in the plane and performing Salaah. In such a situation, one is left with no alternative but to perform Salaah in one’s seat. One may perform Salaah whilst seated in such a situation but the Salaah needs to be repeated on landing as the standing posture is Fardh in Salaah.

If the journey was of 77 kilometers or more making one a Musaafir and one had therefore performed Qasr Salaah whilst flying then one should repeat the Qasr Salaah (of 2 Rakaats) after landing.
