Can we break fast in airplane after sunset

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org
I have a question regarding fasting while traveling. My Father was traveling from east of USA to West. He was fasting that day and when he left his city it was 2 pm (iftar time in the city of origin was 5:30pm). He took a flight which was more than 5 hrs long. During the flight he could see the sun about to set but due to the plane traveling west it was not setting. Estimating the sunset time at his location (in-flight) and thinking that in the city on the ground the sun must appear to be already set, he broke his fast. Now he wants to know if that was right or should he have waited to reach his destination to break his fast.
If someone saw with one’s eyes the setting of the sun and broke fast then this is fine and the fast is complete.
