Question:
If a person with a trimmed beard is going to lead Esha and Taraweeh Salah during the month of Ramadhan in our Masjid and there is no other masjid close by, what should we do? There is no way we can remove him from this post.
Answer:
It should be well borne in mind that to shave or trim the beard to less than a fist-length is Haraam and a major sin. A person who does so is considered a Faasiq (open transgressor/sinner).
The very esteemed position of Imaamat requires that the Imaam have the greatest Taqwa and adherence to the Shari’ah and Sunnah. Nabee H has stated:
الإِمَامُ ضَامِنٌ
Translation: The Imaam is responsible (for the salaah of the followers)

Owing to him being a leader of the community and a representative of the Jamaat (congregation) whilst in communion with Allah Ta Ala during the congregational Salaah, it is extremely audacious that he assumes the position of Imaamat, neglecting the beloved Sunnah of Nabee H and contravening the laws of Shari’ah.
The appointment of such a person as an Imaam is Makrooh-e-Tahrimi (an act deemed deeply reprehensible in Shariah). The Salaah behind such an Imaam will be valid however, and the sin incurred will be upon the Imaam and those who appointed him, not the Musallis (followers).
With wisdom and compassion, the Imaam should be advised to let his beard grow. If this cannot be done by yourself, request a learned, respectable, elderly individual or somebody who has an informal relationship with him to do so. Engage in Dua regularly, beseeching Allah Ta’ala to guide in this matter, the Imaam and those who have appointed him.
It is preferable for you to perform your Salaah in another Masjid. If you unable to do so, perform Salaah in Jamaat (congregation) behind this Imaam. The Salaah will be valid and the defect of the Salaah of the congregation due to the Imaam’s negligence and violations of Shari’ah will be burdened by him.

ولا بأس إذا طالت لحيته أن يأخذ من أطرافها ولا بأس أن يقبض على لحيته فإن زاد على قبضته منها شيء جزه وإن كان ما زاد طويلة تركه كذا في الملتقط .والقص سنة فيها وهو أن يقبض الرجل لحيته فإن زاد منها على قبضته قطعه كذا ذكر محمد رحمه الله تعالى في كتاب الآثار عن أبي حنيفة رحمه الله تعالى قال وبه نأخذ كذا في محيط السرخسي

قوله ( وكره إمامة العبد والأعرابي والفاسق والمبتدع والأعمى وولد الزنا ) بيان للشيئين الصحة والكراهة أما الصحة فمبنية على وجود الأهلية للصلاة مع أداء الأركان وهما موجودان من غير نقص في الشرائط والأركان ومن السنة حديث صلوا خلف كل بر وفاجر وفي صحيح البخاري أن ابن عمر كان يصلي خلف الحجاج وكفى به فاسقا كما قاله الشافعي
