Adhan As An Alarm Or Ringtone

Question:

What is the ruling for having the athaan as ones alarm or ringtone?

Answer:

The trend of having the Adhān, (recitation of Qur’ān and Nasheeds) as a ringtone has become common. This is not permissible. The Adhān was not and has not been prescribed to alert one for the mundane task of receiving a call. Using the Adhān as one’s alarm or ringtone is tantamount to abusing the sanctity of the Adhān. At times, people who have such ringtones forget to put their mobile off or on silent mode; as a result, it rings in the toilet. This is gross disrespect to the Adhān. 

The Adhān is a great sign from the signs of ALLAH TA ALA. The Adhān was legislated to inform of the time of Ṣalāh – to cut oneself off from all worldly affairs and proceed to the Musjid to engage in the worship of ALLĀH TA ALA alone, and using it as an alarm or ringtone creates confusion, causing people to mistakenly assume that the time of Ṣalāh has entered. Furthermore, it involves inappropriately using it for purposes other than that for which it was prescribed.

ذَلِكَ وَمَنْ يُعَظِّمْ شَعَائِرَ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِنْ تَقْوَى الْقُلُوبِ (32) سورة الحج

(قوله والله أعلم) مفعول كرهوا، وأسكن الميم للوزن أو على حكاية الوقف (قوله ونحوه) بالنصب عطفا على محل ” الله أعلم ” كأن يقول وصلى الله على محمد (قوله لإعلام ختم الدرس) أما إذا لم يكن إعلاما بانتهائه لا يكره، لأنه ذكر فيه وتفويض بخلاف الأول، فإنه استعمله آلة للإعلام ونحوه إذا قال الداخل: يا الله مثلا ليعلم الجلاس بمجيئه ليهيئوا له محلا، ويوقروه وإذا قال الحارس: لا إله إلا الله ونحوه ليعلم باستيقاظه، فلم يكن المقصود الذكر أما إذا اجتمع القصدان يعتبر الغالب كما اعتبر في نظائره اهـ ط.
