Q: I am a doctor and one of the things which I could end up doing is a medical procedure called thoracotomy, which is opening a man’s chest and decompressing his heart to bring him back to life, but to do this procedure one needs to practise on pig’s chest. Being a Muslim, is it permissible to touch and cut open pigs? I am confused because if I get trained, I could save a human life.
A:It is permissible to dissect a pig for research purposes.
