Separate Till for Alcohol

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za
Q: I am buying a shop for business. The  problem is that shop also sells alcohol and I don’t want to sell alcohol but I am not able to remove it completely in one day. It takes time to remove the alcohol from my shop. Can I have separate tills for the shop: one for alcohol and other for all other things so that iI don’t use that money? One day I will remove the alcohol completely.

A. Why can you not remove alcohol from the shop immediately? Once the shop becomes yours, you have the right to do so. Even having separate tills will not make it permissible to sell alcohol. The Hadeeth prohibits dealing in alcohol on every level. (Ibni Maajah V2 P1121).

You will have to remove the alcohol from the shop immediately. Keeping alcohol in the shop even if you are keeping it separate will diminish the Barkat and you will all along be under the curse of Allah Ta’aala and His Rasool (Sallallaahu Alayhi wa Sallam). So you should remove the alcohol before you begin trading

Allah Ta’aala knows best.
