What is the status of the hadīth “Seek knowledge even as far as China”?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I have spoken to you about my waswasa’s before, and I was quite comforted. I experience a loads of thoughts and still getting them and I am getting rid of them gradually and Alhamdulilah they are gone quite better. The issue is that once I was having a debate with my uncle about the solution to the probles of Muslims and he was saying we should gain knowledge. I argued that real knowledge is of shariah and not of duniya. He qouted that famous hadiths of china.

To seek knowledge even if you have to go China, which I said is dhaeef based upon Ashraful Jawab of Maulana Thanvi. Now thinking about that incident I got frustrated on uncle in heart and I refer to the hadith with some disrespectful words, because I was not considering them the words of the Prophet Sallalahu alahi wasalam. Now I don’t remember that I said that in my heart or my tongue moved. But then I realise that weak hadith is not neccessary a lie. But because of these whispers I don’t have control over myself. Now some researc has shown there is actually difference of opinion regarding this hadiths.

The question are

1) have I gone out of the fold of Islam

2)What is the status of this hadiths

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

1. No, you have not gone out of the fold of Islam. A believer should be very careful of one’s words especially in relation to using disrespectful words about hadīth and avoid arguments, especially with elders. [i][ii][iii][iv][v]

2. The hadīth in question is weak and while some muhaddithīn have gone as far as to classify it as fabricated others have said that its various transmissions causes it to be raised to the rank of sound based on supporting evidence [hasan li-ghayrihī]. [vi][vii][vii][ix]

However, this is only in regards to the wording of this particular hadīth. The overall meaning is correct and it refers to the seeking of religious knowledge, and not to worldly or secular knowledge as discussed at length in Ahsanul Fatāwā. [x]
