Martyrdom due to death by MERS

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

In light of recent issues in the Middle East with the people being infected by MERS, are people who died or will die with this disease considered to be martyrs? What if a non muslim dies with this disease, would he still go to Jannah? If so wouldn’t it be okay to not be scared and openly seek it.(meaning be happy if we return to Allah SWT)

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Muslims who lose their lives during an outbreak of disease will be considered Shuhadaa (martyrs) in the hereafter. Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam has mentioned in a Hadith:

“A plague is martyrdom for every Muslim.”

Another Hadith states:

“Whosoever is killed in the path of Allah is a martyr. Whosoever dies in the path of Allah is a martyr. One who dies of a disease of the stomach is a martyr. One who dies of a plague is a martyr.” [1]

As such, we may consider those Muslims whose lives are lost during the MERS outbreak as Shuhadaa’ (martyrs). However, they will be bathed and buried according to normal Islamic rites. Their martyrdom shall be rewarded in the hereafter.

Whilst one may be desirous of martyrdom, one should be careful of seeking sickness. Most definitely sickness is a bounty from Allah, in that one’s sins are forgiven or his stages in Jannah are raised or his life may eventually end in this sickness, rendering him a martyr. However, one is not certain whether he will be able to bear the sickness with patience and tolerance. One may end up becoming intolerant and unhappy with the decree of Allah and eventually become sinful rather. Hence, it is unadvisable to seek affliction of a sickness.

However, one may desire and seek martyrdom in general. In fact, it is preferable and rewarding to do so. ‘Ulama have considered such a person who is sincere in his desire for martyrdom but is not accorded an opportunity to gain it from amongst the martyrs.[2]
