Standing Still for Intention for Salah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Is it true that when you make intention (NIyyat) for fard salaah, you have to be still for this niyyat to be valid?

for exmaple, someone is about to miss his rak’aat behind the Imaam, so he runs to join, he makes his fard salaah intention while running, then joins the salaah immediately as soon as he gets to the saff (line), is this persons salaah valid?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

One should not rush to join the congregation. Instead, one should prepare for salah ahead of time and allow enough time to reach the masjid with calmness and dignity. If the salah has begun and one fears that the rak‘ah may be missed, one should proceed calmly to the salah and make up whatever has been missed after the imam completes the salah.

It is not necessary to verbally pronounce the intention or to be still when making the intention. The intention will be valid as long as one is aware of the salah he intends to perform when starting the salah.[1]

And Allah Ta‘ālā Knows Best.
