Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The janaza salah of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was performed individually by the Sahaba. The janaza salah of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was not performed in congregation.[1]

This is mentioned by Ibn Hisham in his al-Sirah al-Nabawiyya, by al-Tirmidhi in his al-Shama’il al-Muhammadiyya, and by others.

Ibn Hisham states:

Abu Bakr (radhiallahu ‘anhu) said: “I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) say, ‘Every prophet is buried where he passes away.’ Thus, the bedding of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), on which he passed away, was raised and a grave was dug for him beneath it. Thereafter, people began to enter the room and perform salah in groups. First the men entered, and when they had finished, women entered, and when they had finished, children entered. No one led the people in salah over Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).” (al-Sirah al-Nabawiyya, 2/663)

The claim in reference is based on a fabricated narration attributed to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).[2] The relevant portion of the narration is as follows:

The first to perform salah over me will be al-Rabb from above His Throne, then Jibril, then Mika’il, then Israfil, then the angels…

Ibn al-Jawzi mentions the narration in his book “al-Mawdu‘at” (The Fabrications), and says, “This is a fabricated hadith that cannot be sound. May Allah punish the one who fabricated it, and may He curse those who undermine the shari‘a with such nonsense and words which do not befit Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) or the Sahaba. The one who is accused of fabricating the narration is ‘Abd al-Mun‘im ibn Idris.

Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (rahmatullahi ‘alayh) said, ‘He (‘Abd al-Mun‘im ibn Idris) used to tell lies against Wahb.’

Imam Yahya (rahmatullahi ‘alayh) said, ‘He is an evil habitual liar.’

Imam Ibn al-Madini (rahmatullahi ‘alayh) and Abu Dawud (rahmatullahi ‘alayh) said, ‘He (‘Abd al-Mun‘im ibn Idris) is not trustworthy.’

Imam Ibn Hibbaan (rahmatullahi ‘alayh) said, ‘It is not permissible to quote what he (‘Abd al-Mun‘im ibn Idris) narrates as evidence.’

Imam Al-Daraqutni (rahmatullahi ‘alayh) said, ‘He and his father are to be rejected.’”

It is clear that the narration is utterly false, blasphemous, and absurd. It is not permissible to relate it.

And Allah Ta‘ālā Knows Best.

Imam al-Tirmidhi (Allah have mercy on him) also narrates this incident in his al-Shama’il on the authority of Salim ibn Ubaid in a long Hadith:

“…….The Companions then asked Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) whether prayer should be performed on the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace)? He said: “yes”. They asked: “How the prayer should be offered?” He said: “A group should enter, recite Takbir, supplicate, and offer their prayers then leave. Thereafter another group should enter, recite Takbir, supplicate, and offer their prayers and then leave.” (Shama’il al-Nabi, no. 396).

The above and other excerpts clearly indicate that the funeral prayer for the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) was offered by the Companions (Allah be pleased with them all). However, it was performed individually without an Imam leading the prayer. Groups of people would come into the room, offer their prayers and then leave. There are many other narrations describing the details of this event recoded by scholars, such as Imam Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in his Fath al-Bari, Imam al-Ayni in his Umdat al-Qari, al-Zabidi in his commentary of Imam Ghazali’s Ihya and others.
