Women performing Janaza Salaah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Q. Is it allowed for women to perform the Janaazah Prayer behind the men with no wall between them? Can ladies do Janaza prayer lead by a lady (ladies only) as it is the practice of our community?

A. Yes, it is permissible for ladies to perform the Janaza prayer behind the men ever if there is no wall between them. It must be noted however, that it has not been an established practice during the time of the Prophet (SAS) and during the generations of the Pious Predecessors that women will join the Janaza prayer with the men, nor was it encouraged. This is the practice which has come down to the latter generations from the time of the Prophet (SAS). Hence, we see that it is not emphasized that women should join the Janaza prayer nor are they called towards its performance. This is well accepted and practiced by the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah. However, if a woman wants to perform it behind the men then her Salaah will be valid.

With respect to a woman leading other ladies in the Janaza Salaah, this is Makrooh Tahreemi (reprehensible to a great extent) and should not be done. Such did not take place at the time of the Prophet (SAS) nor did he encourage it. It is for this reason, the Fuqaha (Jurist experts) have declared that the Imamat (leadership in Salaah) of a woman for other women is Makrooh Tahreemi whether it is Farz Salaah, nafl Salaah or any other type of Salaah.
