If a husband wishes to take his wife, on her request, to a place of privacy post nikah can his parents stop him?

If a husband wishes to take his wife, on her request, to a place of privacy post nikah, can his parents stop him? In a case they do stop him and force the couple to come to their house, what is a man supposed to do in a situation like this?

Is this case, is the wife’s right greater or the parents?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The guidance and advices of parents are motivated by love and concern and therefore the advices of parents have to be viewed in a serious light.

It is important to enquire why would the boy’s parents stop him from going to a place of privacy when he is already married and entitled to privacy with his wife? Where does the son intend to go? Is there anything unislamic there?

In principle, it is permissible (mubaah) for a person to go to a place of privacy on condition there is nothing unislamic there. If there are unislamic activities there and there is fear that one will fall in fitnah, then it is not permissible to go to such a place. Parents have the Shari`ah right to stop their children from going to such places even though they are married.
