Car Insurance

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: If I want to get a car, and in this country it is the law that you have to have car insurance if you drive a car on the roads. Would I be committing a sin by getting a car? Should I try to not get a car?

A: It is permissible to purchase a car in spite of the insurance that is mandatory. Though insurance is haraam but because it is a condition that cannot be avoided, one will be excused. Nowadays a car is not a luxury but a necessity. In cases of such a level of necessity Shariah rules that one will be allowed to take out the insurance. As soon as the car is paid up, the insurance should be cancelled
