Saying Salams in Writing and the Necessity to Reply

Question:

Assalamu alikum wa rahmathullah

Is it obligatory to say jawaab to the salaam written in English sent through mail?

Answer:

Wa alaykum salam wa rahmatuLlahi wa barakatuHu,

Replying to the salam when received in written correspondence is obligatory. (Imam Nawawi’s Kitab al-Adhkar p. 316)
