Zakat Nisab at the End of the Year

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Question:

Nisab is equal £250 making person A sahib nisab. One year passes and person A has £270, however, the nisab this year rises and becomes £300, does person A still have to pay zakat?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

One of the conditions of zakat to be payable is that a free sane Muslim adult must be in possession of the nisab at the beginning and at the end of one lunar year. In the case you have outlined, if that is the person’s total zakatable wealth after one lunar year including gold, silver, investments etc then he does not pay zakat as he no longer owns the nisab amount at the due time of zakat at the end of the lunar year.1
