Is Sterilization Allowed in This Situation?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Question:

I have had continuous menstrual bleeding problems for the past 6 years because of hormonal imbalance and that too very heavy at times. Usually, I bleed for 17 days and have 7 days of purity and I follow according to the habit after taking a course at Whitethread institute with Mufti AbdurRahmaan Mangera Saab.

Doctors have tried medications, contraceptives, marina and I am on herbal medication for a year too which has helped my bleeding settle from 17 days to 11 to 12 days but now the doctor has given an option of endometrial ablation on a condition that they do sterilization with it. Ovaries in endometrial ablation stay intact and so they recommend (insist I should say) sterilization after burning the endometrial lining as it could lead to dangerous pregnancy afterwards. Because sterilization in Islam is haraam, I am confused as to what decision to make.

Your prompt response would be highly appreciated as I need to give my decision soon

Answer:

You should continue taking herbal medications as it has been working for you.

Sterilization will not be permissible, it can potentially be very dangerous for your health and pregnancy. (1)

However, if sterilization is a medical need suggested by expert Muslim doctors, it will then be permissible. (2)

Only Allah knows best.
