Two Conflicting Opinions

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: I have been given money from my bank as a token of apology, and to retain my business with them. Like a gift. Now, most banks in the UK are riba based. I have read fatwa from Hanafi Ulema, that it is acceptable to accept whilst few say it is not permissible because it would a riba based institution. So, when a layperson is presented with two conflicting opinions, can he go for the easier option?

A: You should follow the view of the Ulama that you have confidence in and generally follow. If you are still not clear then adopt the safer and cautious ruling for yourself but do not enforce this on others.
