Is Abdullah a Name of Our Prophet ﷺ?

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

We were blessed with a boy early this year. My wife wishes to add one of Prophet Muhammad’s names (Allah bless him and give him peace) before our child’s first name. So we researched and picked “Abdullah” as the middle name and hence decided to name him “Shaik Abdullah Humayun” instead of “Shaik Abdul Humayun.”

But when our Imam came to the naming ceremony, he mentioned that “Abdullah” is not our Prophet’s name but his father’s and suggested renaming him as “Shaik Habibullah Humayun.” I’m confused now, is “Abdullah” one of our Prophet’s names or not (Allah bless him and give him peace)?

Answer

Thank you for your question. May Allah bless you and your family and make your son a coolness for your eyes.

Abdullah

Abdullah is not generally known to be the Prophet’s name (Allah bless him and give him peace). Abdullah means “servant of Allah,” so, in a general sense, it does apply to all of mankind, especially the prophets. However, specifically, it is the name of the father of our Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace).
