Barbers or Hairstylists job – is it permissible?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Jamia Binoria

My question is that those who cut peoples hair for business (barbers/hairstylists) also shave off and trim people’s beard and also cut people’s hair in different styles and fashions. Is this permissible or not? And is their income from this business Halal or now?

الجواب حامدا و مصلیا

If a barber/hairstylist doesn’t provide any unlawful services (like shaving or trimming peoples beard), then his job and his income are undoubtedly lawful. However, the income of barbers/hairstylists are usually from styling people’s hair and shaving or trimming people’s beards, therefore the earnings they get for services that are not approved of according to the Shari’ah is lawful. For this reason their income is usually mixed with both Halal and Haram earnings. If their income is mostly consists of Halal earnings then his entire income will be deemed as Halal. And if their income is mostly consists of Haram earnings then his entire income will be deemed as Haram.
And Allah knows best.
