Minimum Time of Menstruation-Intermittent or Constant-is Twenty Four Hours

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Darul Iftaa Jordan
Bleeding started at dawn of a Ramadan day, so I broke fast. However, during daytime, I noticed only regular discharges, as is in clean days. Is such day part of Haid(Menstruation)?

Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of The Worlds, and may His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

Once a womannotices blood, even a slight quantity, she is prohibited from fasting and praying. However, she has to consider the following:

If the bleeding has ceased immediately-the vagina is dry or clean- and didn`t continue, then it isn`t menstrual blood. This is because the minimum time of Haid (Menstruation) is a day and a night(24 hours). In this case, she must make up for the fasts and the prayers which she had missed because she thought that she wasn`t in state of purity.

However, if the bleeding resumed and the total of such bleedings reached twenty four hours, even on different days(Fifteen days in maximum), then all of them are Haid days including the ones in which the bleeding had ceased. Therefore, she must refrain from fasting and praying until she becomes pure/clean. This also indicates that her fasts and prayers during the days of blood stoppage were invalid, but she must make up only for the missed fasts.

Al-Imam Al-Ramli said, "Once the total of different, intermittent bleedingsdoesn`t exceed a day and a night, then this is the minimum time of Haid"{Nehayat Al-Mohtajj, 1/325}.And Allah knows best.
