A query regarding the fatwa of masah over cotton socks.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Tafseer Raheemi

as-salamu ‘alaykum!

I am running a website in Swedish called fragaimamen.se (a Swedish version of askimam) – alhamdulillah. I am translating Shaykh’s answers and also other muftis and scholars alhamdulillah.

Currently, I just finished with the fatwa on wiping over socks (this one: http://www.tafseer-raheemi.com/q-is-it-permissible-to-wipe-over-thin-cotton-socks-during-wudhu/)

I need to clarify something; Shaykh Musa Furber (a Hanbali Mufti) has said that the famous opinion in Hanbali madhab is that water proofness of the socks is not an condition; so according to Hanbali madhhab its permisible to wipe over thin socks. He also mentioend that there is a weak opinion stating othervize.

In the fatwa of shaykh Abdur Rahman he said that none of the 4 schools permit it; as shown above, its not really correct. Perhaps Shaykh was only reachen by the weak opinion; husn al-dhannn. Ithink you should ask him to change that in the reply and perhaps clarify it..since its not the chosen opinion in the madhab. Please correct me if Ive stated anything wrong.

was-salamu alaykum

Walaikumussalam w w

First, jazakallah for translating the fatwa and for sharing me in the thawaab of propagating the Deen. May Allah accept your efforts and be pleased with you.

Please note that i don’t know who shaykh furber is, however I didn’t write the answer according to my own understanding of the hanbali madh’hab.

In the fatwa, I have narrated the quote from Ma’arifus Sunan of the great shaykh, Hazrat Maulana Yusuf Binnori R.A. He has quoted that the four schools of thought agree on the fact that Masah on thin socks is impermissible.

So keep that in mind. That should be enough inshallah.

Wassalam
