An unreliable narration regarding ‘Isa (‘alayhis salam) greeting Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) during tawaf

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

I heard in a lecture that while the companions were circumambulating with the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), they saw a hand. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said that it was ‘Isa the son of Mary greeting him.

Is this narration authentic?

Answer

This narration is recorded in Al Kamil of Imam Ibn ‘Adiy.

Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that we were once making tawaf with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) when we saw a garment and a hand. We said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is this garment and hand?” He replied, “Did you all see it?” We said, “Yes.” Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “That was ‘Isa ibn Maryam who greeted me.”

(Al Kamil, vol. 7 pg. 333 and vol. 10 pg. 356-357)

However, the Muhaddithun have declared the narration a fabrication. It is therefore not suitable to quote.

(Tanzihush Shari’ah, vol. 1 pg. 231)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
