Question

Is it permissible to be married to a woman and her paternal or maternal aunt at the same time?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

It is not permissible to have in one’s nikah two wives when one of the wives is the paternal aunt of the other wife.

It is narrated by Saaaiduna Abu Hurairah that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said: “One should not be married to a woman and her paternal aunt, or a woman and her maternal aunt, at the same time.” (Sahih Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)

The reason for the prohibition is that it would cause enmity among relatives and lead to severing the sacred ties of kinship. (Ibn Qudama’s – Mughni p.89 v.7)
