Question:

Are you allowed to use spray hair dye on your hair, it isn’t permanent it just coats the hair and it comes out when you wash it. Are you allowed it?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

There is no problem in dying hair as long as the spray or substance used does not contain any impurity.

During battles it permissible to use black hair dye in order to create fear into the heart and mind of the enemy by making oneself appear young and strong.

And the jurist state that it is recommended for a man to dye his hair and beard even outside of war. However, many of our jurists ruled that it is disliked to use black dye.

Jabir Ibn Abdullah (May Allāh be pleased with him) narrates:

“Abu Quhafah was brought on the Day of the Conquest of Makkah, and his hair and beard were white like the Thaghamah. The Messenger of Allah, May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: ‘Change this with something, but avoid black.” (Reported in Sunan an-Nasai Hadith No.5076)
