Question

What are the etiquettes when listening to Qiraa’ah? Is it permissible to speak while it is being played on a CD?

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Answer

Allah (SWA) in the Holy Qur’an has said: “So when the Qur’an is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive mercy” (Surah Al A’raaf v.204)

From the aforementioned verse we can derive that when the Holy Qur’an is being recited, it is compulsory to listen attentively. It is not permissible to play an audiotape of the recitation of the Qur’an while engaged in other activities. Furthermore, it is not permissible to play the Holy Qur’an in such a place where people are involved in other works because this results in the Holy Qur’an being disrespected. (Maariful Qur’an p.164 v.4) Therefore, it will not be permissible to speak to others whilst the Holy Qur’an is being recited from the CD.
