Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Allah Ta’ala is extremely merciful and kind. Allah Ta’ala is waiting for His slave to turn back to Him in forgiveness, so that Allah can forgive his sins and elevate his status. Allaah Ta’ala says in the Quran:

“And it is He Who accepts the repentance from His slaves, and forgives all sins, and He knows all your actions” (al-Shura, 25)

And in another verse Allah mentions,

“Do they not know that Allaah is the One Who accepts the repentance of His slaves and he takes the Sadaqaat (alms, charity), and that Allaah Alone is the One Who forgives excessively and is the Most Merciful?” [al-Tawbah 104]

Similarly, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) conviced us that Allah will forgive us by saying,

“Whoever asks Allah for forgiveness before the sun rises from the west (Qiyamah), Allah will forgive him.” (Sahih Muslim)

In another narration of Sunan at-Tirmidhi, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said,

“Verily Allaah accepts the repentance of His slave as long as the death-rattle has not yet reached his throat.” (Sunan at-Tirmidhi)

If a person fulfills the conditions  Istighfaar and only eats Halal, there is no reason why his repentance will not be accepted.

The conditions of Tawba are:

  1. To stop doing that sin,
  2. To regret perpetrating such a sin,
  3. To make a firm resolution to never commit the sin again.

And if the sin trespasses the rights of others, you need to fulfill their rights. If wealth was taken illegally, that wealth should be returned. If the person knows that you spoke bad about him behind his back, then you need to apologize to him.

If a person does not fulfill even one of the aforementioned, then the Tawba will not be accepted. If a person fulfilled all the above, then definitely Allah will accept his repentance.

There are a few signs to prove that a persons repentance has been accepted:

  1. His heart becomes soft and it becomes easy for him to do good deeds,
  2. He easily manages to abstain from sin,
  3. He begins to see Barakah (blessings) in his family, wealth, health and time,
  4. He finds inner peace and solace,
  5. He feels comfortable to sit with the pious, and in gatherings of Iman.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best

Wassalaam,
