Spending surplus wealth in charity is better than hoarding it

Question

What is the reference for this narration and can it be quoted?

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “O son of Adam, it is better for you if you spend your surplus [wealth over and above your needs]. Withholding it is evil for you. There is no reproach for you [if you withhold that amount] necessary for a living.”

Answer

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded this as part of a longer Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu ‘anhu). The Hadith is therefore authentic and may be quoted.

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1036)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
