Among the greatest of sins according to Ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu)

Question

What is the correct reference for this narration?

إن من أكبر الذنب أن يقول الرجل لأخيه: اتق الله، فيقول: عليك نفسك أنت تأمرني

Answer

Imams Tabarani and Bayhaqi (rahimahumallah) have recorded this as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Al Mu’jamul Kabir: 8587, Shu’abul Iman: 7896)

Imam Nasai (rahimahullah) has recorded a similar narration. See here.

Translation

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “Certainly from among the greatest of sins is when a man says to his brother, ‘Fear Allah!’, he says, ‘Worry about your own self, [who are you] to order me.’”

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
