Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Kindly provide a brief bio on Qutaybah Ibn Sa’id (rahimahullah)?

Answer

Abu Raja, Qutaybah ibn Sa’id (rahimahullah) was a well-traveled, wealthy and extremely prominent Muhaddith. He was born in the year 150 A.H., and passed away in the year 240 A.H.

The Muhaddithun have mentioned that “Qutaybah” was, in actual fact, an agnomen/title (لقب) and not his first name. Some Muhaddithun have stated Qutaybah’s first name to be Yahya, whilst others have mentioned that it was ‘Ali.

Nevertheless, he was known as [one of] the greatest Muhaddith[s] of Khurasan.

He acquired Hadith from several renowned Aimmah and Muhaddithun such as Imams: Malik ibn Anas, Layth ibn Sa’d, ‘Abdullah ibn Mubarak, Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah, Waki’ ibn Jarrah, and others (rahimahumullah).

Qutaybah (rahimahullah) also had many students that became great Aimmah and Muhaddithun. Amongst them were the likes of Imams: Ahmad ibn Hambal, Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasai, and others (rahimahumullah).
