Three deeds of Iman

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Can you please provide the reference for this Hadith

Sayyiduna ‘Ammar ibn Yasir  (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) narrated; Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said:

Whoever has three qualities will have completed the faith; fairness from yourself to others, offering peace (salam) to the world, and spending in charity even while poor.

(Sahih Bukhari)

Answer

This narration is not recorded by Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) as a Hadith in his Sahih.

Rather, Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) cited it without a chain (ta’liqan). It is incorrect to reference this kind of a narration to Sahih Bukhari, without stating that it is a ta’liq.

Another point to note is that Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah), when he did cite this, he cited it (albeit ta’liqan) as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Ammar (radiyallahu’anhu), and not as a Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam).

The full chain for this has been recorded in several Hadith sources, among them are:

Musannaf ‘Abdur Razzaq, Hadith: 19439 and Musannaf ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 31080.

Imams Tabarani and Bazzar (rahimahumallah) have recorded it as a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) [i.e. as quoted in the question above].

(Al-Mu’jamul Kabir and Musnad Bazzar, Hadith: 1396. Also see: Fathul Bari, before Hadith: 28 and Taghliqut Ta’liq, vol. 2 pg. 36-40)

One may quote either version.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
