A du’a asking protection from sudden death

Question

Is this a du’a found in a Hadith?

Answer

This is part of a du’a that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would recite on both the ‘Eids. Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Al Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 7568. See the full Hadith here)

‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) has declared a narrator extremely weak.

(Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 2 pg. 201)

Transliteration and translation

O Allah! Do not cause us to suffer sudden destruction, nor seize us by surprise. Do not hasten us [to death] out of rights and a will.

One may recite du’as that have been recorded with weak chains like this one.
