Du’a for protection from Shirk

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is this Hadith correct:

“If someone reads the following du’a three times, then his shirk related sins will be forgiven,

الَّلهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُشْرِكَ بِكَ وأَنا أَعلَمُ وأَستَغفِرُكَ لما لا أَعلَمُ

Allahumma ini aujubika un ushrika bika wa ana a’lamu wa astaghfiruka lima la a’lamu.”

Answer

I managed to locate the following Hadith that is closest to the wordings of the du’a in question:

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘Shirk (polytheism) is more subtle than the movements of an ant. Should I not show you’ll [a du’a] that will remove minor and major forms of polytheism?

Recite: Allahumma inni a’udhu bika an ushrika bika wa ana a’lam, wa astaghfiruka lima la a’lam.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from ascribing any partner to you knowingly. I also seek your protection from unknowingly [ascribing partners to you].

(Musnad Abi Ya’la, Hadith: 55-56)

Note 1: There are other versions as well that support this.

Refer: Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 30163, Targhib, Hadith: 57 and Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 10 pg. 223-224.

Note 2: The narrations that I have referred to, do not mention that ‘shirk related sins will be forgiven’ as stated in your query. Rather, they state that one who recites this [in some narrations: thrice] will be protected from both forms of Shirk.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
