Du’a for a good death

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

I need your help with learning a masnun dua for a good death. Please let me know if the words quoted below are masnun or not.

Kindly let me know the reference if they are masnun and suitable for practice as a Hadith.

If they are not masnun, can you teach a dua from masnun text that asks Allah most high to grant us husnul khatima.

If that is not possible, anything from the companions (radiyallahu ‘anhum) or the salaf (rahimahumullah) on husnul khatima supplication.

Dua: Allahumma inni as’aluka husnul khatima.

Answer

I haven’t seen the words in your query as a du’a in the Hadith. However, the meaning is fine.

The following du’a is from the Hadith and it has the meaning you are seeking:

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ خَيْرَ عُمْرِي آخِرَهُ ، وَخَيْرَ عَمَلِي خَوَاتِمَهُ ، وَخَيْرَ أَيَّامِي يَوْمَ أَلْقَاكَ

Allahummaj ‘al khayra ‘umury aakhirahu, wa khayra ‘amaly khawatimahu, wa khayra ayyami yawma alqaka

Translation

O Allah, make the end of my life the best part of my life, my best deeds my last ones make the best of days the day in which I meet you.

(Majma’uz Zawaid, vol.10 pg.158.See here for the full narration.)

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radiyallahu’anhu) is also reported to have recited this du’a.

(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 30124 & Amali Ibn Bishran, Hadith: 1042)

One who has the habit of remaining in wudu will also have a good death insha Allah.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
