Explanation of the narration regarding giving charity without delay

Question

I would like to know the level of this Hadith regarding sadaqah and charity repelling calamities. I would also like to know the meaning and any commentary.

باكروا بالصدقة فإن البلاء لا يتخطاها

“Give charity without delay, for indeed, calamity cannot overcome it” (Tirmidhi)

Answer

I have not come across this Hadith in Sunan Tirmidhi. ‘Allamah Sakhawi (rahimahullah) has also stated that this Hadith is not recorded in the Sihah Sittah. (Al Maqasidul Hasanah, Hadith: 281)

Rather, it is recorded in Al Mu’jamul Awsat and other Hadith collections. See the references and authenticity here

The Muhaddithun explain that this Hadith encourages giving charity to those deserving before one becomes ill or passes away for calamities cannot overcome it. The Hadith portrays sadaqah and calamities as two race horses. Whichever one wins the race, will not be beaten/overcome by the other. Therefore by hastening charity, a person ensures that he is not overcome by calamity.

(Refer: Mirqat, Hadith: 1887)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
