Authenticity of the Hadith regarding sleeping on the stomach

Question

What is the authenticity of this Hadith?

قال: فبينما أنا مضطجع في المسجد من السحر على بطني إذا رجل يحركني برجله، فقال: إن هذه ضجعة يبغضها الله قال: فنظرت فإذا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم

Answer

This is part of a longer Hadith recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) saw a Sahabi (radiyallahu ‘anhu) lying down in the Masjid on his belly, prodded him with his foot and said, “This is such a posture that Allah dislikes.” When the Sahabi looked, he realised this was Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith:5001)

Imams Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah (rahimahumallah) have also recorded Hadiths which discourage sleeping on the stomach. The Hadiths on this topic are therefore well corroborated.

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2768, Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 3723-3724-3725. Also see: Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah with the footnotes of Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah -hafizahullah- Hadith: 27214 and 27215)
