Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Kindly provide the complete Hadith wherein mention is made that Zakah is taken from the wealthy and given to the poor.

Answer

Imams Bukhari, Muslim and others (rahimahumullah) have recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma).

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1496 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 19; Also see Fathul Bari, Hadith: 1496)

Translation

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) has narrated:

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said [the following] to Mu’adh ibn Jabal [radiyallahu ‘anhu] when he sent him to Yemen:

‘Certainly, you are proceeding to a people that are Ahlul Kitab. When you come to them then invite them to bear witness that there is none worthy of worship besides Allah and that Muhammad [sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam] is the messenger of Allah.

If they [accept and] obey you regarding that, then inform them that Allah Ta’ala has made five prayers incumbent upon them, every day and night.

If they obey you regarding that, then inform them that Allah Ta’ala has ordained upon them charity [i.e. Zakah] to be taken from their wealthy and given to their poor.

If they obey you regarding that, then be wary of the valuables of their wealth.

And fear the du’a [supplication] of the oppressed, for indeed there is no barrier between him and Allah.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1496)

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
