The Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) regarded the Quran to be correspondence from Allah

Question

Is this a Hadith?

إن من كان قبلكم رأوا القرآن رسائل من ربهم فكانوا يتدبرونها بالليل ويتفقدونها في النهار

Answer

‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah) has cited this narration as the statement of Hasan al Basri (rahimahullah) and not as a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

(At Tibyan Fi Adabi Hamalatil Quran, pg. 72. Also see: Al Majmu’ of ‘Allamah Nawawi, vol. 2 pg. 169, Darul Fikr edition)

Translation

Hasan (rahimahullah) said: “Those before you considered the Quran to be the correspondence from their Rabb. They would ponder it by night and act upon it by day.”

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
