Reciting the same surahs in consecutive rakats due to forgetfulnes

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Question:

Asalamualaikum

If anyone recites surah Ikhlas in the 2nd rakat of witr salah and then due to forgetfullness again recites the same surah in the 3rd rakat of witr after surah Fatiha plus surah an Nas also after Ikhlas,is that person’s prayer valid? is sajdah suhuv required? if it is not required but the person has still offerd it, what is the status of his salah i.e. is it valid or not. what is the general ruling about reciting the same surahs in consecutive rakats due to forgetfulnes?

Answer:

Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

Yes, the person’s Salaah will be valid. Sajda Sahw was not required for this, but, it is not proper to have the Qiraat in the 3rd rakaat longer than that of the 2nd rakaat. If the person did the Sajda Sahw, his Salaah remains valid, and there is nothing to do.

If a person recites the same Surahs in consecutive rakaats out of forgetfulness, the Salaah will be valid.
