Making a promise not to commit a sin

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: If one has made a promise to Allah Ta’ala to give up a certain sin and later on fell into that sin, hence breaking this promise, is there any kafaarah for breaking such a promise.

Bismillaah

A: If you only said promise but did not say any word of qasam, then this will not constitute an oath.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
