Repeating a sin with the intention of making tawba later.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalamoualaikoum

What happens when a person commits a severe sin, makes tambah but then repeats the sin again with the thought of doing tawbah again?

Thank you

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, it is mandatory for a person to make tawba after committing any type of sin major or minor.1 However, if a person has committed a severe sin (gunnah e kabira) , then the following three conditions should be adhered for the validity of ones tawba:2

1)    He must refrain from committing the sin.

2)    He must express remorse over committing the sin.

3)    He must make a firm resolution never to return to that sin again.

In your enquired situation, if the person made sincere tawba, the probability of him committing that sin again is very unlikely. Thus, if he commits the sin again he will get a sin and will have to make sincere tawba. One should not commit a sin with the intention of doing tawba later. He might not get the tawfeeq to do tawba and be entrapped in the evil of sin for a long time. Allah forbid.
