What is Sunnah. Is it all the things that the prophet did or just the things he preferred.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I have heard only a few things for eating that are classified as Sunnah. Is it so that the prophet ate only these things. Please tell me as to what is sunnah.

Answer

1) In principle, any action that was carried out by the prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam), or was carried out infront of him and he did not object to it, is called Sunnah.

2) The sacrifice of the holy prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) for this ummah can never be understood. Aisha (Radhiallaahu Anhu) says that three consecutive moons used to pass by and the stove in the mubarak house of Rasullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) should not be lit. The sahabah enquired that what should the holy prophet survive on, she replied dates and water.
Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) cherished good food but did not get it.Hence to eat good food will be regarded as a bounty of Allah Taa’la,which should be used to fullfill our obligations to Allah Taa’la.
